100-year-old resident at The Firs proves fitness has no age limit at Budleigh Salterton care home

The lively fortnightly sessions have become a firm favourite at the home, with residents enjoying a range of gentle, adapted exercises designed to support movement, strength and confidence.
From arm stretches and seated marching to ball games and music-led movement, every exercise can be adapted so residents can take part at their own pace.
There is plenty of encouragement along the way too, with the room regularly filled with laughter, smiles and a little friendly competition.
Resident Hazel, aged 87, said: “I always look forward to the sessions. They’re such good fun that you almost forget you’re exercising.
“I always feel brighter afterwards, and it’s lovely doing it together with everyone else.”
The oldest resident taking part is an impressive 100 years old, showing that there really is no age limit when it comes to keeping active and having fun.
Emma, Home Manager at The Firs, said the sessions support residents’ wellbeing in more ways than one.
She said: “The classes are always incredibly popular, and we have a fantastic turnout every time.
“They help residents stay active, but they also bring everyone together. There’s music, laughter and a real sense of fun, which is just as important.
“We want residents to continue enjoying the things that make them feel happy, confident and involved. These sessions show that exercise doesn’t have to feel like hard work. It can simply be a lovely afternoon spent moving, laughing and enjoying each other’s company.”
The fortnightly classes form part of The Firs’ varied programme of activities, designed to support residents’ physical and emotional wellbeing.
