Residents at The Firs Residential Home are inviting members of the local community to pick up their knitting needles or crochet hooks and help with a special project supporting members of the Royal Marines family.
The home’s keen knitting group recently began working on Bootneck Blankets – a national initiative that brings together handmade knitted or crocheted squares to create blankets for members of the Corps Family who may be going through difficult times.
Residents gathered together to start their first squares, enjoying an afternoon filled with conversation, laughter and yarn. Now they are hoping the wider community will join them in the effort.
Each blanket is created from knitted or crocheted squares measuring 24cm by 24cm, using DK yarn in one of the traditional Corps colours – red, dark green, navy or yellow. The squares are then combined to form blankets that are gifted to those who may need warmth, comfort and support.
Lucy, Activities Coordinator at The Firs, said the project has already brought residents a real sense of purpose.
“We have some wonderful knitters here who were so excited to get started. It’s been lovely seeing everyone come together around the project, sharing stories and enjoying an afternoon doing something they love.
We would love members of the local community to join us too. Even one square makes a difference, and it’s a lovely way to be part of something that supports people who may really need a little comfort.”
The team at The Firs would love to hear from anyone locally who enjoys knitting or crocheting and would like to contribute a square – whether that’s one or many.
