Keen Knitters at The Firs Take on Innocent’s Big Knit Campaign

At The Firs Residential Home, our talented residents have always found creative ways to stay active and engaged, but their latest project is both quirky and unique! Led by our crochet queen, Janet, our resident knitters have embarked on a fun, fruity challenge as part of Innocent’s Big Knit Bobble Campaign, in partnership with Age UK.

The Big Knit campaign invites knitters from all over the country to create as many little woolly hats as possible for Innocent smoothie bottles. For every smoothie sold with a tiny hat on top, Innocent donates 30p to Age UK, helping to provide essential services and support for older people. It’s a fun and meaningful initiative, and residents couldn’t wait to get involved!

Manager of The Firs, Nicola Shayler, is delighted with the residents’ involvement. “It’s such a positive and purposeful activity for everyone. Not only are our residents getting to indulge in their love for knitting, but they’re also contributing to a brilliant cause. It’s really spurred residents on.”
Thanks is given to the talented Ann (resident Iris’s Daughter) for a recent lesson on how to crochet.
Many of the ladies who attended the workshop are wonderful knitters and they were keen to try something new. It did proved to be quite the challenge. However some great progress was made within the workshop, with several coasters being created, which look wonderful!
The Firs would like to thank Ann for giving up her time to spend with residents and getting them started on their crochet journey.
Crafting for a Cause
Janet has long been the pride of The Firs, known for her beautiful crochet creations, from beautiful pumpkins to intricate scarves. But now, she’s passing on her skills and inspiring the rest of the residents to pick up their knitting needles for this fabulous cause. Under her guidance, our knitters have been hard at work, making progress on what is soon to be a variety of colourful and creative little hats for smoothie bottles.
The atmosphere in our common room has been buzzing with excitement as each resident contributes to this wonderful campaign, sharing tips and encouraging one another. And their first milestone? A beautifully crafted, cute strawberry hat that’s already making everyone smile!
Making a Difference Together
The Big Knit Campaign is more than just a creative outlet for residents – it’s an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of older people across the UK. With every behatted smoothie sold, Age UK receives 30p to help fund their vital work, from offering companionship and advice to providing support services that improve the quality of life for older adults.
At The Firs, they believe in the power of community and creativity, and this project has brought both to life in such a meaningful way. They are incredibly proud of their residents for their dedication and the joy they are spreading with each stitch.
Join the Fun!
Residents are just getting started, and they can’t wait to see what they create next! They invite everyone to follow their journey as they knit, purl, and crochet their way through this fantastic campaign. Stay tuned for more updates and pictures of the latest creations from their talented team of knitters.
