Salvation Army Honours Woodland Court Resident Beryl Watts with Special Visit

Woodland Court was recently filled with music, memories, and emotion as members of The Salvation Army visited to celebrate the life and service of resident Beryl Watts. Wearing her Salvation Army uniform with pride, Beryl, who dedicated over 30 years to the organisation, was deeply touched by the visit, which highlighted her remarkable contributions to the community and her enduring faith.

Beryl’s journey with The Salvation Army began in the early 1960s when she met her late husband, Brian, while working as a Christian in Ashford. Inspired by Beryl’s steadfast faith, Brian converted to Christianity, and together they trained at Sir William Booth College to become Salvation Army ministers. Their shared calling took them across the country, with appointments in Chesterly, Durham, and Manchester, where they raised their five children while continuing their ministry.

Their work was truly a family affair, with the Watts children joining in Salvation Army activities, including the band, where Beryl and Brian’s musical talents shone. Despite the challenges of frequent relocations and balancing family life, Beryl embraced her mission wholeheartedly, conducting countless weddings, funerals, and Sunday services while also leading vital community programs such as lunch groups and baby groups.

“The Salvation Army was our life,” said Beryl. “It was busy, but it was so rewarding to see the impact we could make on the community.”

Her career spanned over three decades, during which she achieved the ranks of Major and later Brigadier, a testament to her dedication and leadership. Even in retirement, Beryl remained active in her faith, attending services at the Portsmouth Salvation Army Church and contributing to scripture readings.

The recent visit from The Salvation Army was a highlight for Beryl, who wore her uniform proudly for the occasion, a symbol of her enduring commitment to the organisation. The visit featured music and fellowship, creating a moving tribute to Beryl’s years of service.

“It brought back so many memories,” said Beryl. “I felt so proud to wear my uniform again and to share my story with people who truly understand the meaning of service and faith.”

Woodland Court is proud to celebrate Beryl’s inspiring legacy. Her life of compassion, faith, and service serves as a shining example of how dedication and love can transform communities.
