Residents, families, and team members at The Firs Residential Home came together this week to celebrate World Kindness Day with a project that’s already brought smiles, stories, and a few happy tears.
Wanting to mark the day in a meaningful way, the home created a Kindness Tree – a simple idea that quickly turned into something far more special. Residents dipped their hands in paint, pressed their handprints onto colourful cards, and added heartfelt messages about what kindness means to them. Some wrote about friendship. Others shared memories of kindness shown to them over the years. A few simply wrote, “thank you.”
What made the tree truly beautiful was how everyone got involved. Families joined in, staff added their own messages, and the activity room filled with gentle chatter about small acts that have made big differences in people’s lives. A smile. A cup of tea made just how someone likes it. Holding the door open. Listening when someone needs to talk. It all counts.
Nikki, home manager for The Firs said:
“It’s easy to forget how powerful the smallest acts can be. Kindness is something we see every single day in our home – between residents, between staff, and between our wider community. This project has been a lovely reminder of that.”

The team also took the opportunity to recognise their incredible staff members, whose kindness, care, and compassion shape daily life at The Firs. Whether supporting residents through big moments or brightening an ordinary afternoon, their dedication never goes unnoticed.
The finished Kindness Tree now stands proudly in the home – a colourful, uplifting reminder that kindness isn’t only celebrated on one day of the year. At The Firs, it’s part of everyday life.
