Finding Purpose as We Age: How Our Homes Help Keep the Spark Alive

As we grow older, holding on to a sense of purpose can be the key to truly living, not just getting by. It’s what puts that twinkle back in the eye, gives us a reason to get up with a smile, and reminds us we’re still part of something bigger. At Buckland Care, we understand how vital this feeling is, and we’re committed to making sure each of our residents feels it – because life is always more than just going through the motions.

Rediscovering Joy in Everyday Activities

For many, moving into a care home can seem like the closing of a chapter, but at Buckland Care, it’s the start of a new adventure. Take Joyce, one of our residents at Inglefield. She’s happiest when she’s helping out in the kitchen or getting her hands dirty in the garden when the sun’s out. And on rainy days? You’ll find her indoors, bringing colour and creativity to her flower arrangements. It’s these small but meaningful routines that keep her connected, joyful, and, most importantly, fulfilled.

Passing on Skills and Wisdom

Over at Hartwell Lodge, we have a different kind of expert in our midst. When the staff find themselves with a car that’s misbehaving, there’s no need to call for outside help. We have our very own engineering whiz – a resident with a PhD, no less! When it comes to motors, this gentleman’s knowledge is second to none. The staff joke that they have to step back and let the real professional take charge, proving once again that age is no barrier to making a valuable contribution.

The Importance of Contribution – Big or Small

Of course, purpose isn’t always about grand gestures. Sometimes, it’s the smaller acts that bring the most joy. Like Betty, a resident at Woodbury House, who finds her sense of belonging simply by helping to set the table for meals. For her, it’s a comforting routine that gives structure to her day and a way to give back to the home she loves. It may seem like a small task, but for Betty, it’s everything.

Creating a Personal Sense of Fulfilment

At Buckland Care, we make it our mission to get to know each resident individually. What makes them smile? What sparks their curiosity? Whether it’s joining a book club, rekindling an old hobby like knitting, or simply lending a hand with daily chores, we’re here to help them find their own sense of purpose. Because we believe that everyone deserves to feel like they still have something to offer, no matter how big or small.

The Role of Relationships

It’s not just about what we do – it’s about who we share it with. Many of our residents form close friendships with one another, finding joy in shared activities like arts and crafts, music sessions, or just a good chat over a cup of tea. These connections create a true sense of community, where everyone feels supported and valued.

Finding Purpose, Every Day

At the heart of it all, we believe that purpose doesn’t have an expiration date. Whether it’s Joyce pottering around the garden, our resident engineer fixing up a car, or Betty setting the table with pride, each person in our care is encouraged to live with meaning. Because at Buckland Care, it’s never just about providing care – it’s about creating a home where life continues to blossom, no matter your age.
