Music is in the Air at Buckland Care Homes: The Joy and Power of Music for the Elderly and Those with Dementia

It’s been a musical few weeks at Buckland Care Homes, where residents have been embracing the rhythm and melodies that lift their spirits. From line dancing to choir performances, music is playing a vital role in enhancing the well-being of elderly residents, especially those living with dementia.

At Inglefield Nursing & Residential Home, residents regularly attend the West Wight Friendly Dementia Choir, where the power of music to heal and connect is clear. “The residents always have such fun, especially at Christmas when they wear tinsel, hats, and sing festive songs,” says Home Manager Charlotte Willis. For residents living with dementia, singing in a choir helps unlock memories, improve mood, and even reduce anxiety. Music has a unique way of reaching parts of the brain that words cannot, making it a key therapeutic tool in dementia care.

Over at West Bank Residential Home, not only did residents enjoy their weekly music and movement session; the ‘WestPack’ Line Dancers’ took centre stage during Roger’s Rooting Tooting Sing-Along. This special event, arranged in honour of Gilly and Mick, who first met at country music nights, had everyone clapping, tapping, and singing along. Roger’s lively performance brought joy to all, showing how music can create magical shared moments, even for those who may find it hard to engage with other forms of communication.

Residents also enjoyed attending St Mary’s final music concert of the year, where harpist Ruth delivered a performance described as “simply breath-taking.” Judy Powell, home manager at West Bank, said, “Though it’s sad to see the year of music end, we were treated to a truly unforgettable performance.” This event was more than just entertainment; it reminded everyone of how music can offer comfort and create lasting memories for residents.

At Kingland House Residential Home, residents spent a morning full of nostalgia with the show Night at the Musicals, featuring classic hits from the Rat Pack. Performer Retro Rita also transported residents back in time with her rendition of beloved oldies, while later in the week, Paul Heath had everyone dancing and singing along to his energetic performance.

Meanwhile, The Firs Residential Care Home hosted their Monthly Communion Service, which featured a beautiful selection of hymns, prayers, and readings. Home manager Nicola Shayler described it as “a peaceful and uplifting experience,” highlighting the spiritual nourishment music provides for the residents.

Heartwell Lodge Care Home were thrilled to welcome back the popular operatic Duo for one of their residents’ favourite Friday nights in. Who needs to go out to the opera when the opera can come to you!

Residents at Brunswick House Nursing & Residential Home also enjoyed a fantastic performance from JB Steelpan Music. Residents were shaking their pom-poms to some Caribbean classics and even had a go at creating their own musical masterpieces!

Wes had everyone up dancing, singing or waving their arms and tapping their feet with his sing a long at Willow Bank on Friday.

In addition to live performances, Willow Bank Residential Home received a thoughtful gift from the Purple Angel Music charity: MP3 players filled with personalised music for residents with dementia. “The reaction from residents Gordon, Jean, Lizzy, and Molly was just priceless—they absolutely love them,” said Home Manager Carole Hall. Music therapy through personalised playlists has been shown to improve cognitive function and lift mood in those living with dementia.

At Buckland Care Homes, these musical moments aren’t just about fun—they’re about harnessing the incredible power of music to enrich lives. For elderly residents and those with dementia, music can provide comfort, joy, and a sense of connection, helping to reduce isolation and foster emotional well-being. As these recent events show, music truly is in the air, and it’s making a world of difference.
