Residents at The Firs Care Home in Budleigh Salterton have been putting their knitting skills to meaningful use as part of a special project supporting the Royal Marines Charity.
The home welcomed Adrienne, who visited from the Royal Marines camp at Lympstone, to speak with residents about the squares they have been making to help create a blanket for members of the Corps Family.
The visit sparked a wonderful afternoon of conversation, memories and connection, with residents sharing their own links to the military. Some spoke fondly of seeing the Royal Marines Band in person, with one resident proudly saying: “The Royal Marine Band is the best in the world.” Another resident recalled visiting the camp herself.
The project has given residents the chance to contribute to something heartfelt and practical, using their time and skills to support others.
The Royal Marines Charity describes the initiative beautifully, saying: “Your time, your skill and your kindness will help us wrap members of the Corps Family in warmth and support. They form a reminder: you are not alone. You are part of a family that stands together.”
Laura, one of the Directors for The Firs said: “It was lovely to welcome Adrienne to The Firs and to hear more about where the residents’ knitted squares will go. The visit brought back lots of memories and opened up some really special conversations. Our residents were very proud to be part of something that will bring warmth and comfort to others.”
The project reflects the home’s focus on meaningful activities that allow residents to stay connected with the wider community, share their stories and continue making a difference in ways that feel personal to them.
