Mulberry House in Bovey Tracey has officially opened a new addition to its grounds, a beautifully designed Memorial Garden created as a peaceful space for residents to reflect and remember their loved ones.
The idea came from long-standing resident Mary Hood, who shared her wish for a quiet corner in the garden where she could sit and think of her late husband and cherished friends. After thoughtful conversations between Mary and Home Manager Helen Hulme, plans were drawn up, and the transformation began.
Gardener Bryan Taylor brought Mary’s vision to life with handcrafted plaques and a stunning carved bench, showcasing his talent and care. Plants and rose bushes were kindly donated by Reece Haywood of R&R Roses in Bovey Tracey, bringing colour and fragrance to the space.
To mark the special occasion, the garden was officially opened by current Bovey Tracey Mayor Sheila Brook and former Mayor and Mulberry House resident, George Gribble. George, once familiar with ribbon-cuttings during his mayoral years, gave a touching speech before joining Sheila to cut the ribbon together. Guests celebrated the occasion with prosecco and warm conversation.
Mary Hood was overwhelmed with the memorial garden and said, “ It was a place she could now sit and remember her husband”
Helen Hulme, Home Manager, said:
“To care and remember those that once cared for us is an honour. Creating a space of peace, calm, and tranquillity where our residents and their families can enjoy nature next to the gentle sound of the water feature is a true privilege. A big thank you to everyone who helped bring this vision to life.”
Mayor Sheila Brook added:
“It was lovely to meet the residents and staff today. I’m sure the garden will bring comfort and joy to many, and I was so impressed by the warm, welcoming atmosphere at Mulberry House. Bovey Tracey is fortunate to have such a caring home in the heart of the community.”
Mulberry House would like to thank everyone who contributed to this special project and looks forward to welcoming more visitors to the garden in the months ahead.
