There’s something about the end of March that lifts the mood. The mornings feel lighter. The gardens start to wake up. And across our homes, there’s a quiet buzz of anticipation.
Because Buckland in Bloom is back.
This is the second year we’ve brought all of our homes together for this shared celebration of colour, community and a little bit of friendly competition. And this time, every single home is taking part.
What started as a simple idea – to brighten our outdoor spaces and welcome spring properly – has grown into something much bigger. It’s become about teamwork. About residents sharing stories of gardens they once loved. About staff rolling up their sleeves. About families popping in with cuttings, bulbs and advice.
Over the next few weeks, you’ll see raised beds refreshed, hanging baskets planted, pathways edged and patios transformed. Some homes are planning planting afternoons with residents. Others are inviting local schoolchildren in to help. A few are already plotting themed displays (there’s always one team that takes it very seriously… in the best possible way).
But Buckland in Bloom isn’t about perfection. It’s about participation.
It’s about the gentleman who hasn’t gardened in years but still knows exactly how deep a seed should go.
The lady who can spot a struggling plant from twenty paces.
The team member who didn’t know they liked gardening until they tried.
There’s something grounding about working with soil. Something hopeful about planting bulbs you know will push through in time. And in a care home setting, those moments matter. They spark conversation. They stir memories. They give everyone something to look forward to.
At the end of March, as the displays take shape across all our homes, we’ll be celebrating the effort, the creativity and the community spirit that Buckland in Bloom brings out in people.
It’s only our second year running this as an annual event – but if last year was anything to go by, it’s already becoming a much-loved tradition.
Here’s to brighter days, muddy hands, and homes that bloom inside and out. 🌷
