Charity Starts at Home: Buckland Care Homes Embrace the Spirit of Giving

At Buckland Care Homes, the commitment to charity is not just a tradition—it’s a way of life. This week, the homes united in support of the annual Macmillan Coffee Morning, proudly displaying green and white bunting and balloons to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. Through warm gatherings of tea, cake, and community, residents, staff, and families came together to make a difference, showing that charity truly starts at home.

At Kingland House Residential Home, the atmosphere was buzzing as residents and guests enjoyed a delightful coffee morning. With a wonderful selection of cakes and smiles all around, the home raised an impressive £100 for Macmillan. This generous donation could help run the Macmillan Online Community for over three hours, providing crucial emotional and practical support to those affected by cancer. Home Manager Tracey said, “We are so grateful to everyone who came along, donated, and made the event such a success!”

The giving spirit didn’t stop there. Hartwell Lodge Care Home hosted a lively coffee morning, raising an impressive £110! Their table was filled with a delicious array of homemade treats, including three Victoria sponges, lemon drizzle cake, coffee and walnut cake, and a range of mini rolls and cupcakes. “It was a wonderfully spent hour, all in aid of a good cause,” said the team at Hartwell, who were overwhelmed by the community’s generosity. Even those who couldn’t attend made donations, proving that the desire to help knows no bounds.

At The Firs Residential Home, the coffee morning was equally successful, raising £67 for Macmillan. The event was brimming with tea, coffee, and a variety of sweet and savoury treats, and it was heart-warming to see so many family members and friends joining in to support the cause. “It was a wonderful morning, and we’re grateful for everyone’s involvement,” said the home’s manager. The Firs’ resident hairdresser, Jamie, also made headlines with his own fundraising feat—a 22-mile charity walk from Seaton to Exmouth, raising an incredible £700 for the Stoma Nurses at RD&E Hospital.

Blackwater Mill Residential Home added an extra touch of creativity to their coffee morning, with their kitchen staff producing a delectable array of cakes, including pink and white swirl cupcakes, rich chocolate cake, and an irresistible cherry cake. Alongside these sweet treats, the home offered café-style coffees and teas, creating a vibrant atmosphere for residents, families, and staff to enjoy. The morning was made even more special by a live musical performance from JC and Kathy of Independent Arts, adding a wonderful soundtrack to the day’s festivities.

Buckland Care Willow Bank team is also planning a Purple Day fundraiser, with all proceeds going directly to Purple Angel. These funds will help provide life-changing MP3 players for free. By making these devices accessible, Purple Angel ensures that more individuals with dementia, such as residents at Buckland Care who have already received MP3 players, can experience the therapeutic power of music.

And the charitable efforts continue! Many of the homes, including Willow Bank Residential Home, are actively collecting donations for Harvest Festival, reinforcing the residents’ love for being part of the wider community and offering a helping hand.

At Buckland Care Homes, charity is woven into the fabric of daily life. From coffee mornings that unite families to heartfelt fundraisers that support important causes, the residents and staff demonstrate the power of coming together for the greater good. Whether it’s raising funds for cancer support, participating in local charity events, or gathering donations for local causes, the community is proud to give back.

These events remind us all that charity truly does start at home—and with every cup of tea and slice of cake, we’re helping to make a difference in the world around us.
