This week, residents at Mulberry House Residential Home gathered for a cherished Tuesday tradition – their “Tea & Chat” morning with Sarah and Sylvia from Bovey Church. The theme was “Things Made by Hand,” sparking laughter, nostalgia, and heartfelt stories as residents shared handmade creations and mementos from years gone by.
Sarah and Sylvia brought along their own crafted items and gifts made by loved ones, which inspired residents to share their own treasures and memories. Many of the residents revealed hidden talents, showcasing beautiful pieces they’d created or stories behind items made by family members. The room was filled with lively conversation as each resident’s story unfolded, reminding everyone of the incredible life experiences that each individual holds.
For the elderly, especially those living with memory loss, revisiting meaningful moments can be both comforting and empowering. “These gatherings bring residents so much joy,” says Helen Hulme, Home Manager at Mulberry House. “For many, sharing memories and stories helps to reinforce their sense of self, which is so important to their well-being. It’s a small moment in their week, but it has a huge impact.”
Helen also highlighted the importance of these interactions, noting, “In care homes, it’s easy to focus solely on physical health, but we believe emotional connection and companionship are just as vital. Our residents look forward to this time to share and connect.”
The “Tea & Chat” mornings at Mulberry House are more than just a social gathering – they’re a chance to create connections, uncover forgotten stories, and build bonds between residents, staff, and community members like Sarah and Sylvia. This simple tradition continues to prove that it truly is good to talk, bringing comfort and joy to everyone involved.
