The Orchards Care Home in Wiltshire is proud to announce its accreditation with the Veteran Friendly Framework (VFF) – a national programme created to ensure older veterans living in care homes receive the understanding, support, and recognition they deserve.
The home first achieved its accreditation in April 2025, when four members of the team completed the training to become VFF Champions. In October 2025, a further ten staff from across different departments took part, strengthening the home’s commitment to truly understanding the experiences of those who have served.
The VFF is used across England to help care homes identify veterans, understand their wellbeing needs, reduce isolation, and connect them with both statutory and charitable services. It centres around eight standards, each supported by practical resources that help homes meet and maintain Veteran Friendly status.
At The Orchards, the impact has been felt in everyday conversations and moments of connection.
Karen, the Area Manager at the home said:
“This training has opened our eyes even more to the stories behind our veterans’ lives. It’s helped us offer care that honours their service and supports who they are as individuals. It’s also sparked new conversations across the home – you can see how much it means when someone feels truly understood.”
The benefits reach far beyond the residents themselves. Staff now feel more confident recognising veterans, appreciating the realities of military life, and providing care that reflects each person’s experiences. Veterans at The Orchards also have greater opportunities to connect with one another and share memories that shaped them.
The Framework also offers valuable support for colleagues who have served, creating a sense of camaraderie within the team. Through the VFF network, The Orchards now has access to further guidance, resources, and referral pathways to ensure every veteran can receive the right support at the right time.
By shining a light on this achievement, The Orchards hopes to raise awareness of the importance of recognising veterans within care settings — and to inspire other homes across Wiltshire to join the growing network of Veteran Friendly providers.
