Residents, families and members of the local community came together for a very special afternoon at Willow Bank Care Home, as the home hosted a 1940s-inspired tea party in honour of its veterans.
The celebration brought generations together for an afternoon filled with music, memories and plenty of nostalgia, with residents proudly displaying their wartime medals and sharing stories with guests.
One of the highlights of the afternoon was Willow Bank resident Major James Featherstone, who dressed in his full military attire for the occasion. His wife, Amanda, also brought along Jim’s collection of medals, giving guests the opportunity to see them up close and hear more about the stories behind them.
Willow Bank was also delighted to welcome the Mayor and Mayoress, Cllr Bill Kimberley and Cllr Mrs Celia Kimberley, who joined residents, relatives, friends and members of the community for the celebrations.
Adding to the nostalgic atmosphere was 1940s singer Belle, who was introduced to the home through Mike at MJE Management. Her performance soon had Union Jack flags waving and residents and guests joining in with well-known songs from the era.
Although the unpredictable British weather meant plans for an outdoor celebration had to be changed, the team simply brought the party indoors, transforming the home into its very own traditional street party.
The home’s kitchen team provided a special afternoon tea spread for guests to enjoy, while Activities Co-ordinator Jackie Burrows brought the whole event together.
Carole, Home Manager at Willow Bank Care Home, said: “It was such a special afternoon and wonderful to see so many residents, families, friends and people from our local community come together.
“For our veterans in particular, occasions like this are about so much more than having a party. They give people the opportunity to share their memories and experiences, to talk about the medals they are so rightly proud of and to know that their contribution is remembered and valued.
“Jim looked incredibly smart in his full attire, and it was lovely that Amanda brought his medals along for everyone to see. There was a real sense of pride throughout the home.
“A huge thank you must go to Jackie for organising such a memorable afternoon, our kitchen team for the wonderful food, Belle for bringing the music of the 1940s to life and, of course, everyone who joined us and made the day so special.”
The event forms part of Willow Bank Care Home’s ongoing programme of activities designed to help residents continue enjoying their interests, sharing their life stories and maintaining strong connections with the wider community.
