A resident at Brunswick House Nursing & Residential Home in Gloucester has proved that patience, determination and a little teamwork can go a very long way after successfully building his very own remote-control robot.
George spent several days working alongside team member Morgan to put the robot together, carefully following the instructions and figuring things out as they went.
It wasn’t all plain sailing. There were a few moments when things didn’t quite work as planned, along with plenty of tweaks and adjustments, but George and Morgan were determined not to give up.
Eventually, their persistence paid off and the pair managed to get the robot up and running.
For George, one of the best bits was being able to proudly show everyone at Brunswick House what they had achieved together.
The project reflects something the team at Brunswick House feels strongly about – that moving into a care home shouldn’t mean giving up the things you enjoy or stopping trying something new.
Residents are encouraged to continue with their interests, discover new ones and take on challenges that bring enjoyment and a real sense of achievement.
Karen, Home Manager at Brunswick House, said: “George was absolutely delighted when they finally got the robot working. He was so proud of what he and Morgan had achieved and couldn’t wait to show everyone.
“There were a few challenges along the way, but that was part of the fun. They kept going, worked things out together and seeing George’s face when it finally worked was just brilliant.
“We’re really passionate about making sure the people who live here continue doing the things they enjoy and have opportunities to try new things too. Moving into a care home doesn’t change who you are, what interests you or that lovely feeling you get when you’ve achieved something for yourself.”
George’s finished robot has certainly attracted plenty of attention around the home – although after all the work that went into building it, he might not be quite so keen to let everyone else have a go!
