Hartwell Lodge care home proudly hosted a vibrant traditional Indian engagement party recently in honour of one of its valued team members, Shilpa. Ahead of her upcoming wedding, which will take place in India on 28th September, the Hartwell Lodge community came together to celebrate Shilpa’s engagement in a way that brought cultural richness and joy to both staff and residents.
The idea for the celebration was initiated by Jennifer, the Registered General Manager, who wanted to mark the occasion in a meaningful and culturally significant way. The festivities featured a delicious selection of traditional Indian cuisine and sweet treats, alongside a variety of engaging activities that brought a taste of Indian culture to the home.
One of the most special moments of the day was the henna ceremony, where residents and guests drew intricate designs on Shilpa’s hands. This custom is believed to bring good luck, health, and prosperity to the bride. Additionally, attendees took part in the Haldi ceremony, a tradition in which a mixture of turmeric and yoghurt is applied to the bride’s face. This ritual is said to ensure the bride has radiant, glowing skin on her wedding day, as turmeric is known for its beneficial properties.
Resident Peggy, who was delighted to be part of the event, said, “Thank you so much for allowing us to be part of this celebration, to experience a new culture and to be personally connected in our own way.” A visitor attending the event added, “This is a wonderful party. It’s the first time I’ve ever experienced anything like this, and we must have this more often.”
Jennifer, the Registered General Manager, commented, “It was better than anyone could have imagined. It was a real dream and the perfect way for us to congratulate our valued team member. The effort put into the event was incredible.”
The engagement party was a resounding success, bringing joy, connection, and cultural enrichment to the entire Hartwell Lodge community. As Shilpa prepares to embark on her new chapter, the home is proud to have shared in this moment, showcasing the strength of community and the beauty of cultural celebration.
