A lifelong motorcycle enthusiast was reunited with one of his greatest passions when family and friends brought a collection of bikes to West Bank Residential Home in Ross-on-Wye.
Motorcycling had always been a big part of resident David’s life. He and his wife travelled across the UK and Europe on their beloved Kawasaki, enjoying the freedom of the open road and creating many happy memories together.
Knowing how much those experiences meant to him, David’s granddaughter and grandson-in-law arranged for family and friends to bring several motorcycles to West Bank.
The moment David saw the Kawasaki Ninja, there was no stopping him from climbing into the saddle once again.
The visit also proved popular with other residents, who enjoyed looking at the motorcycles, chatting to the riders and sharing their own memories and stories of life on two wheels.
Judy, Home Manager at West Bank Residential Home, said:
“It was one of those incredibly special days that reminded us how important it is to really know the person behind the dementia.
“David’s face lit up when he saw the motorcycles, and it was wonderful to watch him reconnect with something that has played such an important part in his life. He certainly hadn’t forgotten how to sit proudly on a Kawasaki!
“The visit sparked so many conversations among our other residents too, with people reminiscing about motorcycles they had owned, journeys they had taken and adventures from years gone by.
“Dementia does not erase the person someone has always been. When we take the time to understand their life, their interests and the things that have brought them joy, we can create moments that help them feel more like themselves again.
“And, of course, everything was carefully planned and risk assessed before David was let anywhere near the Kawasaki!”
Judy thanked David’s family and friends for making the visit possible and helping to create a day that residents and staff will remember for a long time.
