At The Firs Residential Home, learning never stops, especially when it comes to what truly matters—community, creativity, and connection.
This week, residents enjoyed a range of enriching activities, starting with a lively afternoon quiz. While the saying goes, “Every day is a school day,” many of the residents aced the quiz, proving that knowledge never fades, no matter your age.
After swotting up, refreshing their general knowledge and kicking the week off with a quiz, residents then literally kicked off (not outside the gates) but with an indoor game of pass the football as part of their exercise regime with Lucasz. There was positive feedback from residents;
The fun continued as resident Barbara took up watercolour painting. The session was an inspiration for everyone to sharpen their own artistic skills while reminiscing about their school days. Childhood memories filled the room as residents recalled playing conkers and collecting acorns, sparking conversations about the joys of autumn.
Autumn has been a central theme at The Firs this week, with residents diving into seasonal crafts. Their art class produced stunning autumn-themed collages, showcasing the vibrant colours of the season. The pride in their work was clear, and the results were nothing short of magnificent.
The week also featured a celebration of literature in honour of Poetry Day. Residents revisited classic works, with beautiful recitals of famous Shakespearean poems that brought a sense of relaxation and reflection to the home.
Of course, PE was covered twice, and a weekly armchair exercise class was included to keep everyone moving, ensuring that physical wellness remains an important part of life at The Firs.
Spiritual care was also on the agenda, with residents attending Sunday School, at their monthly Communion Service. Lynda and Angela from St Peter’s Church led a beautiful service of hymns, prayers, and readings, providing comfort and peace to all who attended.
But it wasn’t all about activities inside the home. Residents were treated to a well-deserved day out, soaking in the gorgeous autumn sunshine with a trip to The Holt Café at Budleigh Salterton Cricket Club. With breath-taking views of the sea and the River Otter, the residents enjoyed a relaxing afternoon, complete with delicious cake. Cricket enthusiasts in the group were particularly impressed by the club’s newly built pitches, adding to the excitement of the outing.
In a new initiative aimed at strengthening bonds between residents and their loved ones, The Firs is thrilled to announce the launch of their Living Well Activities for Families. These sessions, designed to encourage quality time through shared experiences, will feature a variety of arts, crafts, and cookery activities. Many residents have fond memories of not just school, but baking and crafting with their spouses, siblings, and children, and this initiative aims to bring those cherished moments back to life.
The first session is scheduled for October, where families can join residents in baking festive Christmas cakes—an opportunity to create new memories while celebrating the joy of the season. The exact date will be confirmed soon, but families and friends are always welcome to participate in the daily activities at The Firs.
Through its commitment to lifelong learning, creativity, and community spirit, The Firs Residential Home continues to offer its residents a vibrant and engaging environment where every day brings something new and learning never stops.
