Residents, staff, and members of the Budleigh Salterton community came together at The Firs Residential Home this week to mark a truly memorable occasion – the burial of The Great Buckland Time Capsule.
The ceremony was made even more special with the attendance of Town Mayor Penny Lewis, who joined residents and team members in sealing the capsule before it was carefully placed in its resting spot, ready to be revealed in 2035.
The capsule has been thoughtfully filled with treasures that reflect life today, including poems written by pupils at St Peter’s School, photographs, newspaper cuttings, and residents’ memories. Each item chosen offers a unique glimpse into the present day, capturing the world as it is now for future generations to discover.
The afternoon was blessed with sunshine, making it the perfect setting for the community gathering. Residents and staff enjoyed sharing stories, laughter, and the excitement of imagining what the world might look like when the capsule is opened in ten years’ time. The celebrations were rounded off with delicious cream teas and refreshments, adding to the warm and joyful atmosphere.
Home Manager Nikki said:
“This project has brought so much joy to everyone involved. From the poems created by local schoolchildren to the memories shared by our residents, it’s a real celebration of community spirit. We can only imagine the excitement in 2035 when the capsule is opened, and future generations look back at this special moment in time.”
