BARBARA ‘BOBBY’ CELEBRATES AN INCREDIBLE 100 YEARS at mulberry house

Barbara ‘Bobby’ Blatchford, a cherished resident of Mulberry House Residential Home, celebrates her 100th birthday. Born on 9 January 1925 in Plymouth, Bobby’s century-long life is a testament to courage, kindness, and adventure, making her an inspiration to all who know her.

A Life of Service and Determination

At just 17, Bobby enlisted in the Women’s Air Force (WAF) during the Second World War, despite knowing her parents would be less than pleased. She quickly earned the nickname ‘Bobby’ to distinguish her from the many other Barbaras in her unit.

During her time at Exeter Airport, she and her team plotted the locations of incoming German aircraft during bombing raids. Bobby’s dedication was unwavering—on one occasion, she had to be ordered into an air raid shelter, refusing to stop her work until a commanding officer intervened.

After the war, Bobby met and married Don Blatchford in 1948. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and adventure, remaining devoted to each other for 73 years until Don’s passing in 2021.

A Life of Love, Faith, and Friendship

Bobby’s family has always been her pride and joy. She has two sons, Roy and Eric, three grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Despite the family moving around for Don’s work, Bobby formed lasting friendships wherever they went.

A true giver at heart, Bobby volunteered as a Samaritan in Southampton, delivered meals to those in need, and even took books to hospital patients. She was also a longstanding member of the Mothers’ Union and a valued part of her local church community.

For more than 30 years, Bobby worshipped at St Blaise Church in Haccombe, where she helped with flower arranging, carol concerts, and social events, forging deep connections along the way.

Adventures at Home and Abroad

Bobby’s adventurous spirit didn’t end with her wartime service. She travelled widely with her husband, exploring Europe, the USA, and India. Highlights include cross-country skiing in her 60s, a hot air balloon ride in her 70s, and a trip to the Taj Mahal for her 80th birthday. Even into her 90s, Bobby enjoyed walks on Dartmoor, family visits to Ireland, and cultural trips around Oxford.

Secrets to a Long Life

Bobby’s approach to life is as practical as it is inspiring. She credits her longevity to a nutritious diet, an active lifestyle, a loving family, a strong faith, and a close circle of friends. That, and the occasional glass of wine or Baileys Irish Cream!

At 100 years old, Bobby takes only the odd sleeping tablet and still enjoys outings with her family, such as lunches at the Rock Inn on Dartmoor or ice cream from the van at Haytor car park.

A Celebration of a Century

Bobby’s milestone birthday will be celebrated with her family and friends at Mulberry House, where she has been lovingly cared for since 2023. The team at Mulberry House describe Bobby as “an absolute treasure” who brightens everyone’s day with her warmth and wit.
